The Campus Bike Centre is a pilot project being funded with the help of Clean Nova Scotia, Dalhousie Athletics Department and the University Office of Sustainability. Starting in the fall of 2009 the Campus Bike Centre will be offering drop-in sessions and classes in bicycle repair/maintenance and cycling safety education. The Centre will also be offering a small bicycle term-loan program. The long-term vision of the Centre includes developing funding support for the ongoing educational programming events and a Dalhousie Bike Share initiative.
Our Mission:
Our mission is to establish Dalhousie University as a community leader in active and sustainable modes of transportation. We will accomplish this by offering a safe space for Dalhousie community members; providing educational programming; and continuing the work of other community minded cycling organizations in building a vibrant cycling culture.
Our Vision:
The Dalhousie Campus Bike Centre envisions itself as becoming a leader in the Halifax cycling community. The DalBikeCentre will work to make it possible to live in Halifax without a car; that cycling is seen not just as recreational activity but as a viable mode of transportation; and community members participate in cycling as part of a healthy and active lifestyle. People should not be afraid to ride their bikes to campus. In fact it should be seen as a preferred mode of transportation. Our vision is to make Dalhousie into a green, sustainable, bike friendly campus.
Our Goal:
Promote cycling as an alternative mode of transportation and as a form of recreation. Become a leading figure in the Halifax Regional Municipality cycling community. Recognize the importance and impact of bicycle traffic in and around the campus. Endorse the bicycle as a viable, economical and desirable mode of transportation. Support development strategies that include bicycle facilities which create linkages to current and potential urban and recreational routes. Represent the interests of bicyclists.
What We Offer:
Staff/volunteers will work with the owner of the bike to help them locate and fix the problem. The Campus Bike Centre is not a bike shop. You cannot drop off your bike and expect to pick it up in a day or two. Participants will be expected to be actively involved with the process. We do not store bikes. If it does not get fixed during the visit then the owner of the bike will take it with them. Our floor space is small, which limits us to how much gear/equipment we can use. We may have some used parts available, but you should not count on a part being there. We recommend that if you know the problem before hand please buy the appropriate part and we will help install it. Some bicycle gear and basics like tubes, brake pads, shifter/brake cables and chains will be available for sale.
